Who is a Jew? Who are today's Jews?

Who is a Jew?
A Jew is any person born from a Jewish mother or a true convert to Judaism.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew%3F

Who are today's Jews?
Today's Jews are the descendants of the patriarch Ya'aqov/Jacob (whose name is also Yisrael/Israel) and of true converts to Judaism.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew

Different names trough history to describe the Jewish People:
- The 'Ivriim/Hebrews: from the time of Abraham until the Exodus of Egypt;
- The Beney Yisrael/Children of Israel: from the Exodus of Egypt until the split of the two Kingdoms: Yisrael/Israel and Yehudah/Judah;
- The Yehudim/Jews: from the Kingdom of Yehudah/Judah until today;
- The Israelites: from Napoleon and contemporary era until today.

Note: to not be confused with these two terms: Israelis and Zionists: neither the Zionists nor the Israelis represent the Jewish People, they only represent their members:
- The Zionists are only the followers of a 19 century political movement of secularist Jews and Gentiles whose aim was the return of all the Jews of the world into the Land of Israel and establish a secular anti-Torah State, puting aside the Torah as a whole and most Jewish traditions;
- The Israelis are only the citizens of the secular State of Israel (where 25% of its inhabitants are non Jews) and are comprised of only 38% of the world Jewish population (2007).

Arabs from the surrounding countries started also to come looking for jobs;

The term Yesha' changed to Yesh: Yehudah and Shomeron.

Malkhuth Yisrael/Kingdom of Israel: in the near future the faithful Jews believe that there will be the Kingdom of Mashia'h ben David/Anointed son (descendant) of David any time before 2040. CE or 5800 in the Jewish calendar).

The Government of Ancient Israel

The king of ancient Israel was not an absolute monarch. By tradition, the King was required to obey the laws of the Torah, which includes both religious laws and 'secular' laws. Rabbinic political theory describes authority as being split between three powers: the "Crown of Kingship" (keter malkhut), the "Crown of Priesthood" (keter kehuna), and the "Crown of Torah" (keter torah). According to this theory, institutional power was shared between this triumvirate of monarch, priest, and prophet.
The ministers of the king were not allowed to listen to the king if he commanded to break any laws.
However, the king had certain rights that the average citizen did not have, such as being allowed to create a thoroughfare through private property.
The king could be tried by the Sanhedrin, the supreme court of Israel. This right originally applied to all kings of Israel, but was limited to kings of the house of King David when King Yanai of the house of Hasmoneans intimidated the Sanhedrin.
The king had certain laws that he had to follow over and above the rest of the nation, such as having to always have a Torah scroll with him, and having limits on the amount of money and horses he was allowed to have.
The Jewish hope for a Messiah is that a king arise from the house of David who, while ruling over the people of Israel, will follow the laws of the Torah and build its institutions.

The History of the Sanhedrin

The origin of the Sanhedrin can be found in the Council of the seventy elders founded by Moshe Rabbenu (Moses): "Gather to Me 70 men of the elders of Israel... and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, so that they should stand there with you" (Numbers 11:16). This was the first Sanhedrin. Counting Moses himself, it consisted of 71 members. Further, G-d commanded Moshe Rabbenu to lay hands on Yehoshua [Joshua] son of Nun. It is from this point that the Sanhedrin is considered as beginning. As individuals within the Sanhedrin passed away, or otherwise became unfit for service, new members underwent Semicha ordination. These ordinations continued, in an unbroken line: from Moshe Rabbenu to Yehoshua, to the elders, to the prophets (including Ezra, Nehemiah), to the Knesses HaGedolah or Great Assembly, to the sages of the Sanhedrin. It was not until several hundred years after the destruction of the Second Temple that this line was broken, and the Sanhedrin dissolved.

History of Israel's Governance

The leadership of Israel was recieved and transmitted as follows:

Avraham/Abraham recieved the blessing from Ha-Shem/G-od;

Yits'haq/Isaac recieved the blessing from his father;

Ya'aqov/Jacob recieved the blessing from his father (Ya'aqov/Jacob became Yisrael/Israel);

The twelve Shevatim/Tribes recieved their blessing from thgeir father, among them was:

Yosef/Joseph who ruled over Egypt and all the Beney Yisrael/Children of Israel;

1. Moshe/Moses recieved the leadership and the Torah from Ha-Shem/G-od;

2. Yehoshu'ah/Joshua recieved them from Moshe;

3. The Zeqenim/the Elders recieved them from Yehoshu'ah/Joshua;

4. The Neviim/Prophets recieved them from The Zeqenim/The Elders;

5. The Anshey Keneseth Hagedolah / the Great Assembly (the Sanhedrin) recieved them from
the Neviim/Prophets;

Steps 1. trough 5. are summerized in the first Mishnah of Pirkey Avoth / the Maximes of our Fathers as follows

1. Moses received the Torah from Sinai and transmitted it to Joshua; Joshua to the elders; the elders to the prophets; and the prophets handed it down to the men of the Great Assembly.

The faithful transmission of the Torah and the leadership of the People of Israel then continued during the Galuth Edom / Exile of Rome as follows:

The Sanhedrin to
the Tanaim (of the Mishnah) to
the Amoraim (of the Gemarah) to
the Geonim to the Savoraim to
the Rishonim (the First Ones, who summerized the Halakhah/Jewish Law) to
the A'haronim (the Last Ones) to
the contemporary Rabbis: 'Ha'hamim (for the Sefaradim) or Gedolim (for the Lituanians) or Rebbeim (for the 'Hasidim)

Present day Yehudim/Jews all over the world are ruled by these last great Rabbis.

Note: the present day State of Israel has no divine authority over any Yehudi/Jew in the world but it has only a de facto secular/democratic authority over its citizens (where 25% are non Jews): it represents only its own citizens.

Any time in the near future (before 2040), 'Am Yisrael/the People of Israel will be ruled by a new Sanhedrin and by a King who must be a descentdant of David: he will be The Mashia'h / The Anointed, meaning that he will be officially anointed by the Sanhedrin and by divine authority he will represent and have full authority over the whole 'Am Yisrael/People of Israel.
